  6. Count the stones as you go: 'That is five! Can we get to six?'
  7. When the tower falls, admire how high it reached and try again

Parent tip

Start before you overthink it. No-prep activities work best when you begin while the moment is still recoverable.

What success looks like

Curiosity in action — pointing, collecting, asking ‘what’s that?’ A child engaged with nature is learning without knowing it.

Gather smooth, flat stones of different sizes and work together to balance them in a stack. This quiet, meditative outdoor activity demands intense concentration and a gentle touch — each stone must be placed carefully or the tower tumbles. It is a wonderful way to practise patience, precision, and fine motor control in the fresh air.

Why it helps

The DfE's EYFS guidance on physical development identifies threading and weaving as key activities that help children develop their pincer grip and learn to manipulate different materials. Placing stones with precision demands sustained visual attention and refined fine motor control, strengthening the same neural pathways used for threading, drawing, and eventually writing. The slow, deliberate pace also practises self-regulation — toddlers must manage their impulse to rush, learning that gentle, careful movements produce better results.

Variations

  • Sort stones by size before building — smallest to largest or largest to smallest.
  • Paint the stones with washable paint first and build a colourful cairn.
  • Build multiple small towers and create a 'stone village' with pathways between them.

Safety tips

  • Use stones too large to be a choking hazard — at least the size of a toddler's fist.
  • Supervise to ensure stones are not thrown or dropped on toes.
  • Wash hands after handling stones, especially if collected near water or soil.
