What success looks like

Flushed cheeks, big smiles, and a calmer child afterwards. If they want to do it again, you’ve found a winner.

A structured movement activity that challenges gross motor skills and builds confidence. Each station targets a different physical skill, from jumping and crawling to balancing and throwing, giving toddlers a full-body workout disguised as play. Completing the course from start to finish also builds sequencing skills and the ability to follow multi-step directions.

Why it helps

CDC's developmental milestones for 2-year-olds list 'runs' and 'walks up a few stairs' as expected movement skills — exactly what an obstacle course rehearses in a single play session. Each station targets a different physical ability, giving children a full-body workout disguised as play. Following the course from start to finish builds sequencing and multi-step direction-following, both important for school readiness.

Variations

  • Add a 'stepping stones' section using paper plates on the floor.
  • Include a tunnel made from chairs and a blanket.
  • Time each run and try to beat the previous record for older toddlers.

Safety tips

  • Use soft materials for jumping stations to cushion landings.
  • Ensure crawling tunnels are stable and will not collapse.
  • Remove any fragile or dangerous objects from the course area.
