Walking on flat ground is hard enough for a new walker, but navigating uneven surfaces is where real balance development happens. This simple cushion course challenges your toddler to lift their feet higher, adjust their centre of gravity, and recover from wobbles — all essential skills for confident walking. The soft landing surfaces mean that the inevitable tumbles are cushioned and safe, turning falls into part of the fun rather than something to fear.

Best for this moment

when your toddler needs to move and burn energy, especially when you need an indoor option.

Parent tip

Start before you overthink it. No-prep activities work best when you begin while the moment is still recoverable.

What success looks like

A good outcome is a few minutes of engaged play, some back-and-forth with you, and a small sign of progress in body awareness.

  1. Lay four or five cushions and pillows in a path across the room, touching each other to form a continuous soft trail.
  2. Place a favourite toy or stuffed animal at the far end as motivation.
  3. Stand at the end near the toy and call your child: 'Come and get Teddy! Walk across the squishy path!'
  4. Let your child step onto the first cushion — hold their hand if they need it for the first attempt.
  5. As they wobble and adjust, narrate what's happening: 'Ooh, it's wobbly! You're balancing so well!'
  6. If they fall onto the cushions, laugh gently and encourage them up: 'Soft landing! Try again!'
  7. Once they reach the toy, celebrate, then turn them around and walk back together.
  8. Rearrange the cushions into a different shape — a circle, a zigzag — and try again for a fresh challenge.

Why it helps

Walking on unstable surfaces activates the vestibular system (balance) and proprioceptive system (body awareness) far more intensely than walking on flat ground. Paediatric physiotherapists recommend uneven-surface play for early walkers because it accelerates the development of postural control and ankle stability. The soft materials also reduce fear of falling, which is important because anxiety about tumbling can actually inhibit a toddler's willingness to practise walking.

Variations

  • Add a blanket draped over two cushions to create a small 'hill' that your child must climb over, introducing elevation changes.
  • Place cushions further apart so your child must step on the floor between them — practising the transition from soft to hard surfaces.
  • For confident walkers, try sofa cushions standing upright as 'walls' they must step between without knocking over.

Safety tips

  • Remove any hard furniture from the immediate area in case your child falls sideways off the cushion path.
  • Ensure cushions are firm enough to walk on — very soft or memory foam cushions can be too unstable for beginners.
  • Stay within arm's reach throughout, ready to steady your child if they lose their balance near the edge of the path.

When to pause and seek extra support

Stop if your child becomes distressed, unsafe, or consistently frustrated by the activity. If play, behaviour, or development worries keep showing up across settings, check in with a qualified professional.
